Auckland Geography Teachers Association (AGTA)

“The Auckland Geography Teachers Association (AGTA) has been part of a contract since 2002 with the Rotorua Education Network to supply material for secondary teachers. This has consisted of the production of work sheets and resources that can be incorporated into the New Zealand curriculum and are therefore of use to all schools. It was felt that it was most beneficial to use current teachers for this work since they are more aware of the needs of schools and can meet such needs accordingly.

“As a result 1 or 2 members of the AGTA committee have held this responsibility as their port folio. These members are expected to liaise closely with the Rotorua Education Network to ensure that material used remains current and update this as required. This often involves travelling to Rotorua and collecting information from the operators that are part of the network. Assessments have also been written to compliment these activities as by doing so many schools are more willing to take students on field trips.

“The material produced on the website has been extensively used by teachers and has proved extremely popular. At the present time it covers essential parts of the Level 1, 2 and 3 syllabus for Geography and has recently expanded to cover Travel and Tourism as well. As such it is important for us that such liaison remains.”

“REN’s organisation made the trip so much easier as a teacher. Having bookings made and vouchers delivered to the first attraction saved us valuable time.  All email communications were punctual and informative. The prepared schedule was invaluable to leave at school so they knew where we were going and when. REN is an excellent organisation to deal with as teachers we are very lucky to have such a professional organisation assisting us.”

“As always we are made to feel welcome and the programme gives all my students experience they have had before. For international students, it is seeing the important aspects of NZ history and especially an understanding of Māori history, combined with experience activities they wouldn’t normally. For students of tourism, they get to experience a combination of Māori and adventure tourism and to see opportunities that would be available to them as a career choice.”

“Thank you so much for the opportunity to attend Skyline at a discounted cost. The group of students I work with come from poverty stricken backgrounds and would never usually be able to afford attending something like this. Our group wairua has definitely been nourished! Also them also being international students was a great way for me to showcase our backyard to these students. I understand that one student is expecting his overseas family to visit in December to celebrate the end of his studies and he has already told them that a visit to Rotorua and the luge is on the cards for them.”
