Waka Tours take students to sites of significance in the Whitianga area. One such site is the pā at Wharekaho which is the tūrangawaewae (home site) of the Ngāti Hei people and where the first friendly encounters between Māori and Europeans occurred in New Zealand.

The history and stories of those times illustrate what it was like for Māori adjusting to a new way of life. This tour brings awareness to how this community was shaped.
